Two Images For a Computer Piece (With an Interlude)

Lloyd Williams / United States / 1969 / Czech Premiere / 10 min.

synopsis

The basic material for the computer music composition was supplied by Max Mathews' sound synthesizer from Bell Laboratories and then further processed electronically by Vladimir Ussachevsky. The piece was performed as part of the historically important Composers' Showcase of new music at the Whitney Museum. The unsettling surreal images of the bowels and depths that accompany the music evoke the notion of the birth of the new and perhaps even the terrifying.

biography

Lloyd Michael Williams (1940) is an American experimental filmmaker. As a high school student, he moonlighted as an usher at Cinema 16 in New York City, the only place that showed experimental films on 16mm. Later, he made a living in advertising. In 1960, he worked with Mary Ellen Bute. With Jonas Mekas and others, he founded The Film-Makers’ Cooperative, a famous association of filmmakers dedicated to archiving and distributing experimental films, in 1962. Most of his 16mm films date from the 1960s. Vladimir Ussachevsky, a pioneer of electronic music, also composed the music for his film Line of Apogee (1968).
