The Great Sadness

Pavel Štingl / Czech Republic / 2023 / The film already had its Czech Premiere / 52 min.

synopsis

1953 was a year of great sadness for Czechoslovak citizens. Obligatory mourning intervened in their lives after the deaths of Stalin and Gottwald. Their grief was sincere because of the currency reform, which ruined their lifelong savings. In retrospect, 1953 was the height of social despair.

biography

Pavel Štingl graduated from the Department of Documentary Filmmaking at FAMU. In the early 1990s he started a long series of large political documentaries from the former socialist bloc countries, which were awarded at many festivals. In 1995 he founded his own production company K2, where he produced several documentary series and a number of large-scale co-productions.
