But Not for Ever

synopsis
The combination of archival footage from the African island of São Tomé, a former Portuguese colony with a slave system, and contemporary shots of Lisbon's decaying greenhouses, among which busts by Manuel de Oliveira hide in the lush vegetation, is complemented by urgent, poignant verses by São Tomé’s poets Alda Espírito Santo and Conceição Lima, recited by musician Gerson Marta. The images are linked by the image of the cocoa bean, a symbol of oppression – but not forever.“…each coffee bush now exhales a dead slave…”
biography
The works of Anežka Horová (born 1996) regularly appear at the Ji.hlava IDFF in the Exprmntl.cz section, most recently Botanical (2021). In addition to experimental films and video installations, the director also produces music videos, fashion films, fashion photography and music.
Klára Trsková (born 1992) works at the National Film Archive as a curator and lectures on Afro-Lusophone cinemas and literatures. Her forthcoming dissertation explores the theme of internalized oppression overcoming it in African literature written in Portuguese.
The two authors met while teaching at the Center for Audiovisual Studies at FAMU. Together they created the short film One Snail on a Beauty Trail (2022), which won the Intermedia and Experimental Award at the 38th FAMUFEST.
