Czech Underground Films of the 1980s
90 min.
synopsis
A selection of freshly restored Czech underground films focuses on the trio of artists Pablo De Sax, Karra, and Pigi. The 1980s in underground cinema is characterized by an attempt to create a parallel subculture as an alternateive existence, reflecting the seemingly unreformable state of contemporary Czechoslovak society, but still allowing for a parallel zone for life on the edge. In this spirit, the work of the 1980s doesn’t create a strong confrontational framework of great history, but rather a peculiarly paradoxical form relating to contemporary realities, the iconography of Spartakiadas, and public celebrations.contact
The films presented are digital reconstructions of video projections. The project was carried out by FAMU’s Center for Audiovisual Studies from 2013-2015.
