Inheritance
Jules Leaño / Germany / 2024 / International Premiere / 6 min.
synopsis
This diary film is based on a letter left by the filmmaker to her mother to explain why she is travelling to the Philippines to find her extended family. She reflects in pictures rather than words on the country of her origin whose language, Tagalog (one of the two official languages in the Philippines), she does not speak. The artefacts of the film footage then transcribe parts of the records of the journey, just as memories mark only the fragmentary knowledge retained in the diaspora.biography
Jules Leaño is a Scottish-Filipino experimental filmmaker and visual anthropologist based in Berlin. Her work explores collective memory and the diversity of the social and political realities we experience. She co-founded the collective Alternative Fictions, which works at the intersection of visual anthropology and documentary film.more about film
