Mining the Bottom – Keynote speech and conversation on the endangered life in the deep sea

Deep sea mining is designed to provide critical minerals needed to develop greener technologies. But it seems that we don't really need the precious metals from the deep ocean to make the transition to renewable energy and transport. And the risks to deep-sea ecosystems from mining are serious and not yet fully understood. According to scientists, its impacts on ocean life could be catastrophic and irreversible. The biodiversity of the seabed is unique, vast and undiscovered. There are fascinating life forms carrying genetic information that can help us understand much about the origin of life and its very nature. Patricia Esquete guides us through the seascapes that are the target of deep-sea mining, their mysteries and their connections with life on land.
