Living without an exit

Where is my home: from racial segregation to the right to housing (discussion of the film House with no exit)

The discussion will explore the persistent problem of the poverty trade
in the Czech Republic, particularly from the perspective of racial segregation and the right to housing. In the context of the 35. anniversary of the Velvet revolution, five guests will focus on how post-revolutionary developments have affected
inequalities in housing, which disproportionately affect not only the Roma population, but also other marginalized groups in the Czech Republic. The guests will therefore focus on systemic failures that perpetuate these inequalities and outline options for a more equitable housing policies that respect and protect basic human rights. Discussion freely builds on the film "House with no exit," which offers a critical look at exploitative housing practices and raises uncomfortable questions about the right to decent living conditions.

Guests:

Růžena Dunková and Iva Janůlková (Diocesan Charity Ostrava-Opava) will share their experience as community workers with the business of poverty in socialy excluded localities and hostels in Ostrava. Their experience will show that the content of the film House with no exit is not just an exceptional but a permanent feature of poverty trafficking.

Viktor Davídek (Ponton, z.s.) will point out the connection between the provision of substandard housing in hostels with labour exploitation of (not only) Ukrainian workers in industrial complexes in the Pilsen region. His experience will show that
poverty trafficking does not only affect Roma, but affects many others marginalised groups in the Czech Republic.

Václav Walach (Faculty of Social Studies, University of Ostrava) will place the poverty trade into the broader economic, political and social context in central and eastern Europe.

Barbora Bírová (Platform for social housing) will evaluate the development and current situation in the field of social housing policy in the Czech Republic.

Moderator: Petr Kupka, Tomáš Hlaváček, Martin Kohout (to be specified)
